If you’ve ever dealt with bladder leaks, then you know how living with leaks can feel like tricky business. If you’re always keeping an eye out for the nearest bathroom or are too afraid to step foot outside the house for fear of random drips and spritz, then it may be time to consider a bladder control product. (And no, these are *not* the same as period pads and pantyliners!)
Finding The Perfect Bladder Control Product
Truth be told, there are plenty of products out there. From pads to pessaries, there’s a bladder control product that will work for you. Promise. But how do you pick the best one for you? Choosing a bladder control product shouldn’t feel like rocket science. We’ll share 6 easy steps to follow to find your proverbial glass slipper.
Step 1: Getting To Know You
To find the right bladder control product, you need to do a little soul searching. Ok, well, maybe not *soul* searching, but it’s helpful to know your leaks (aka incontinence) in order to beat them.
Take some time to figure out how heavy your leaks tend to be. If stress incontinence has you experiencing a small spritz with every sneeze, a super absorbent product might be too bulky. But, if you need a product for overnight or those moments when your bladder fully lets loose, a little pantyliner-type product definitely won’t be enough. The coverage level that will work best will depend both on how much you leak and how often you plan to swap out the product.
It’s also important to know when you’ll be needing certain products. Whether you’re sleeping soundly or slaying it at the gym, you want a bladder control product that’s right for the moment. For example, most women prefer disposable underwear for night time because it’s less likely to move around if you move in your sleep. And, if you’re wearing form-fitting clothes to the gym, a light pad works best.
Another thing to keep in mind is if you have sensitive skin or are prone to skin irritation from leaks. Some products contain perfumes that can make the irritation worse. Even if you don’t have sensitive skin, try to go with a brand that’s perfume and fragrance free to avoid the extra chemicals. Here at Lily Bird, all our products are fragrance and perfume-free.
Step 2: Choose A Product Type
There are so many bladder control products out there, choosing one can feel like deciphering a treasure map. Do you want pads or underwear? Disposable or reusable? If you’re not sure where to start looking, give our guide to incontinence products a quick read to get a sense for what kind of products are out there. We’ve got you covered.
Step 3: Get A Bladder Control Product Sample (Or Two, Or Three)
Many websites that sell bladder control products offer samples or trials of their products. Our tip? Get a variety from multiple brands so you can try a full range of coverage and design options. Extra sample products are handy for stuffing in your purse or stashing in the car, just in case. At Lily Bird we know it can take a few tests to find the right product which is why every customer starts with a trial.
Step 4: Try It Out!
Now that you’re all sampled up, it’s time to try out your products. Try as many options as you want and test them in a number of situations. This might mean overnight, at work, at the gym, running around with the kids or grandkids, or socializing with the gals. The more you test, the better you’ll be able to decide which product works best for what scenario. Most of our customers need to try a specific bladder control product 5 to 10 times before they know it’ll work for them. That’s why the Lily Bird trial includes 10 products.
Step 5: Assess Each Bladder Control Product
Now that you’ve conducted your experiment, it’s time to assess how well each product worked. Absorbency, odor control, and fit are a few key points to consider to narrow down the field. But it’s not just how well your leaks are handled that matters; make sure the products are comfortable, that the leaks don’t leak, and that the product doesn’t bunch up or become uncomfortable, especially to the point of irritation.
Step 6: Buy ‘Em Wherever Works Best For You
Don’t mind hanging out in the bladder leak aisle at your local store? Buying your products at CVS, Walgreens, or Target might work for you. For the rest of us who would rather skip the store and the hassle — or wouldn’t be caught dead in the aisle for drips and dribbles products — buying online is a great option. Plus, several companies now offer monthly shipments so you don’t even have to think about it. Lily Bird is available on our website and on Amazon, plus we offer both monthly and one-time shipments so you get what you want, when you want it.
